Deaths at the Calais Border

Uncountable lives are wasted and suffer at the hands of the Calais border regime. There is no accurate count of how many people have died. This is a list of people known in Calais or from news reports.

For sure there will have been more, their deaths ignored, the facts covered up or altogether unreported. Many already go unnamed, without vigils and protests, without families or friends to advocate on their behalf.

But we will never let these deaths be silenced. We will not forgive and we will never forget.

These borders kill! One death is too many!

2024:

4 May: A man in his forties is found dead in the Bourbourg canal in Dunkirk.

23 April: Five people, including 3 men, a woman and a 4-year-old girl, died off the beach at Wimereux while attempting to cross to the UK by sea. 49 other people were rescued while the 58 people remaining on board continued their crossing. 

19 April: A man died after being hit by a car at Pont-à-Roseaux, in Loon-Plage.

4 April: A 23-year-old Sudanese man is killed after being hit several times by vehicles on the E40/A18 between Furnes and Oostduinkerque.

1 April: A man in his thirties is pronounced dead after receiving chest injuries near Loon-Plage.

3 March: Rola Al Mayali, a 7-year-old Iraqi girl, drowned in the Aa canal in Watten while attempting to cross to the UK by sea. She was buried on 7 March in Grande-Synthe cemetery.

2 March: Jumaa Alhassan, a 27-year-old Syrian man, drowned in the Canal de l’Aa in Gravelines while attempting to cross to the UK by sea. Chased by the police, he was trying to reach a boat in the canal. His body was only found on 19 March at Grand Fort Philippe during a search for another person, despite reports of his disappearance from his friends and family.

28 February: Eren Gûndogu, a 22-year-old Turkish Kurdish man, is found dead and at least two other people are reported missing off the coast of Calais after attempting to cross to the UK by sea. His body has been repatriated to Turkey.

8 February: A man dies by electrocution on the roof of a Eurostar in the Gare du Nord in Paris. The person could not be identified due to severe burns.

4 February: Rojgar Sadeq, a 35-year-old Iraqi Kurdish man, died after being shot in Loon-Plage, near Dunkirk. His body was repatriated to Iraq.

27 January: A young Sudanese man, Oday (Minnie), aged 19, died in the Transmarck area in the Marck near Calais, after being crushed in the trailer of the lorry in which he was travelling to England. He was buried on 6 February in the Calais Nord cemetery.

14 January: Abadeh Abd Rabbo, a 14-year-old teenager, Aysar Abd Rabou, a 26-year-old man (brothers), Mohammad Al Jbawi, an 18-year-old man, Ayham Alshouli, a 25-year-old man, and Ali Al Oklhat, a 26-year-old man, all Syrian nationals, are killed off the coast of Wimereux while attempting to cross the sea to the United Kingdom. 34 other people were rescued. Abadeh and Aysar were buried on 23 February in the Boulogne-sur-Mer cemetery.

2023:

15 December: A Sudanese man is found dead on the beach at Sangatte.

15 December: One person dies off the coast of Grand-Fort-Philippe after attempting to cross to the UK by sea. 66 other people are rescued.

9 December: One person is killed in Coquelles when a freight wagon containing paper catches fire.

22 November: Two Ethiopian men and a woman are found off Equihen-Plage, after attempting to cross to the UK by sea.

17 November: Two Turkish people, Ali and Rajb, were killed on the A26 near Calais when a lorry crashed into a group of people walking on the hard shoulder. 4 other people were injured.

13 November: Abdelbassit Noureddine, a 22-year-old Sudanese man, dies following a knife attack in Calais.

6 November: Dinh Anh Nguyen, a 37-year-old Vietnamese man, died after being hit by a train near the river road at Loon-Plage.

8 October: An 18-year-old Eritrean man is found dead in Berck, after drowning while attempting to cross to the UK by sea.

30 September: Dinesh Shanmugarajah, a 33-year-old Sri Lankan man, drowns in Loon-Plage, his body is found in the Bourbourg canal.

30 September: A man is found dead at Le Beau-Marais in Calais, after being hit by a freight train.

26 September: A 24-year-old Eritrean woman dies in Blériot-Plage after attempting to cross to the UK by sea.

14 septembre: Jallal Alden Mohamed, a Sudanese man, dies after being hit by a car on the RN225 between Dunkirk and Lille.

23 August: A Sudanese man living in the Wambrechies shelter is found to have drowned in the Deule river, in Lille.

12 August: 6 Afghan men pass away after the shipwreck of their small boat in the Channel. 36 survivors are taken to the port of Calais by the French coastguard, and 22 or 23 more are taken to Dover by the British coastguard. 2 people remain missing at sea.

4 July: Yahya, a Sudanese man, dies after falling from the truck which he had jumped onto to travel to the UK, on the A16 motorway in Calais.

July: Mohammed Rani, a Chadian man, was found dead in a lorry in the UK while attempting to cross into the UK.

31 May: Sami Othman Omar Ibrahim, a 24-year-old Sudanese man, dies after being hit by a truck in the Transmarck area of Marck, near Calais.

10 May: Ahmed Youssef Adam, a 30-year-old Sudanese man, dies after being hit by a truck in the Beaumarais area of Calais. 

5 May: A Sudanese man dies in the prison of Longuenesse. The cause of his death remains unknown.

15 February: A Kurdish man in his thirties dies after being shot in Loon-Plage.

3 January: A Sudanese man dies after being hit by a train, on Rue de Judée in Calais.

2022:

14 December: Hajratullah Ahmadi and 3 other men die during an attempt to reach the UK when the small boat they were in sank. The other 39 people on board were rescued and survived.

30 October: Alhamim Suliman Ahmed, a 26-year-old Sudanese man, goes missing in the Channel.

9 September: Gebrel Tezera, a 30-year-old Ethiopian man, dies after a shooting in the Loon-Plage camp.

9 August: Mohamed Ali, a 22-year-old South-Sudanese man, dies close to Loon-Plage, after drowning in the canal in which he was washing.

7 June: Ahmed Hasan Abdiaziz, a 25-year-old Somali man, dies after being hit by a truck close to Loon-Plage.

29 May: An Ethiopian man, Meretese Kahsay, is killed after being hit by a freight train going from Calais to Dunkirk, in the Beau-Marais neighbourhood in Calais.

23 May: A Kurdish man, Omar Faiq Twfiq, is shot and killed in Loon-Plage, close to Grande-Synthe. Another person is hospitalised after being shot and wounded.

11 May: A Sudanese man is found dead, hanged in the back of a truck in the Transmarck area of Marck, near Calais.

25 March: An Eritrean man, Yassin Osman, in his early twenties, was electrocuted on the roof of a train in Valenciennes. His three friends were injured but have since recovered.  The group are believed to have been trying to reach Calais.

10 March: A Sudanese man, Omar Ismaïl Tela, was killed after being hit by a vehicle as he was walking along the A16 motorway, next to Nouvelle-Eglise. He was buried in Calais on the 28th of March.

28 February: A Sudanese man, Abubaker Alsaken, was killed after being hit by a train in Marck, right next to the living site he was staying in. He was buried in Calais on the 7th of March.

25 January: Abdallah Mohammed Abdallah Youssef, a Sudanese man, dies after being crushed by the truck he had jumped onto as he attempted to reach the UK. He was buried in Calais on the 4th of February.

22 January: A man of Eritrean nationality was hit by a car on the E40 in Belgium, near Gistel (West Flanders).

15 January: Abdallah Saleh, a Sudanese man, died in the Transmarck area of Marck, near Calais, after being run over by a lorry he was trying to board on his way to England. He was buried in Calais on the 21st January.

14 January: While attempting to cross to the UK in a small boat, Ezzadine Soleiman Abdallah, a Sudanese man, drowns. He was buried in Calais on the 21st January.

2021:

24 December: A lifeless body is found on the beach at the border between Heist and Zeebrugge, Belgium.

20 December : A young Sudanese man, Musab Mahmoud Muhammad Omar, died in Calais hospital after being hit by a lorry as he tried to reach the UK. He was buried in Calais on the 27th of December. 

18 December: A lifeless body is found on the beach of Les Palominos at Les Hemmes de Marck.

10 December: A fishing boat off the coast of Calais finds a dead body in its nets.

25 November: A lifeless body is found off the coast of Sangatte.

24 November: A boat sank in the middle of the Channel and 27 people lost their lives – 17 men, 7 women (one pregnant) and 3 children. A few more people are still missing at sea. The people reportedly called both French and British coastguards for help in the early hours of the morning, but there was no search and rescue operation launched until they were spotted by a fishing vessel around 10 hours later, by which time it was already too late.

11 November: Three men from South Sudan are reported missing after a failed attempt to cross to the UK in kayaks.

4 November: A Tigrean man is reported missing after a failed attempt to cross to the UK in a small boat.

4 November: A Sudanese man, Abdallah Ibrahim Hamat, dies after attempting to cross to the UK in a small boat. His body was found on the beach of Wissant. He was buried In Calais on the 24th November. Two other men are reported missing from the same boat after this shipwreck.

4 November: A Sudanese man, Ali Ismael Ali Ahmad, was killed and three others were hospitalised after they were hit by a TER train on the tracks in Calais’ Beau-Marais.

3 November: One Sudanese man was declared dead after being taken unconscious from the sea. Another man is still missing at sea from the boat that they were both in.

21 October: Mohammed Al-Amin, a Sudanese man, died of cardiac arrest in the hospital after being hit by a truck in the Transmarck area after spending three or four months in Calais.

28 September: Yasser, a young man from Sudan, died after he fell from a truck he was trying to get onto and was run over in the Transmarck area.

12 August: M., a 27 year old man from Eritrea, reportedly died of cardio-respiratory arrest in the Calais hospital after being rescued and evacuated from the English Channel when the boat he and 36 others on sank. Another Eritrean man is reported missing from the shipwreck. 

4 February : Loghman, a Kurdish Iranian man is found dead in the top of a lorry parked in Prouvy, near Valenciennes. He was trying, with several people, his chance to the UK.

1st February : The body of a man in his thirties, very likely an exile, is found in the water in Calais harbor. He probably staid 3 weeks in the water.

22nd January : A car hit 2 pedestrians on a regional road in Auchy-au-Bois (62). One 18yo man is injured, but his 26 yo friend, from Afghanistan, died in the accident.

2020:

20 November : Mohammad Khamis, a 20 years old Sudanese man dies hit by a lorry on the highway around Calais, not far from a police intervention with teargas.

27 October : 4 persons died at sea and 3 others are missing. The dinghy they sailed capsized off the coast of Loon Plage. Rasoul Iran-Nejad, a 35 years old man, Shiva Mohammed Panahi, 32 years old woman, and their children, Anita, 9 yo et Armin, 6 yo, Iranian kurds, were found dead. Their 15 month old third child, Artin, is missing, as well as two unidentified men.

18 October : Behzad Bagheri Parvin, 32 years old iranian man is found dead, washed up in Sangatte beach.

5 September : Aleksandra H, born on 2/9/20, died on 5/9/20 of perinatal anoxia following a premature birth. On the 2nd september, police forced the pregnant mother to stay hours on the cold street, after a failed attempt to reach UK, ignoring her call for an ambulance. When she finally reached hospital, she went through surgery but infortunatly it was too late.

19 August : The body of Hamdallah Abdulfatha, a 28 years old sudanese man, is found washed up in Sangatte beach. He died while trying to cross the channel with a friend on a dinghy, which quickly wrecked.

25 May : a body was found floating in the waters close to Calais harbour. Being in too poor conditions to be identified, we only know that is that he was a man, and was wearing a bracelet on which “S. Camara” was written.

9 March: Baqer, an isolated minor, dies on the railway tracks around Metz (France). He was trying to get to England and had spent some time in Dunkirk with his little sister, the parents far away in Iraq.

9 January: M. , 56 years old, of Sudanese origin, is found dead in a lake on the natural area that was made after the eviction of the “Big Jungle”.

2019 :

20th december : Ermiyas Ungessa, a 28 yo man from Ethiopia, dead on a highway in Tournai, in Belgium. He was the father of a 4 years old little girl, still in Ethiopia with her mother.

1st november : a 24 yo man from Nigeria is found dead in his tent in rue des huttes in Calais, probably intoxicated with carbon monoxide

23th october : Nixon, , 34 years old, Sri lankais, commits suicide at the open center of Lanaken (Belgium)

14th october : A 17yo teenager and a 22 yo young man from Irak are found dead, washed ashore in the Touquet beach (Pas-de-Calais, France). They fell out of a dinghy in a failed attempt to reach the UK.

On August 26th, Nicknam Massoud, 48 years old, is found dead at a wind farm off the coast of Belgium near Zeebrugge. It is likely he was spotted on the 18th twelve miles off the coast of Dunkirk attempting to swim across the Channel to England (link to blog post).

9th august : Mitra M., a 31 years old woman from Iran falls from a dinghy in the Channel. Her body would have been found off the Netherlands shores.

On July, 8th, Geri, a young eritrean man died falling from a lorry on the A29 in Belgium.

On July, 6th, Mr Kouadio, 21yo, a young man from Ivory Coast drowned off the coast of Grande Synthe.

At the end of June, a man from Irak was hit by a vehicule on the highway, around Grande-Synthe. He died in july, after some days in coma.

20th May : a young eritrean man die hit by a car on the A16 highway, around Guemps (nearby Calais)

April 17th : Amaneal, born in 1986, Ethiopian, his body found on a railway at Silly (Tournai)

8th March : Adam Usman Kiyar, 20 years old, ethiopian, is found dead in the back of a lorry during border check at the Calais harbour.

2018 :

18th November : an exile man is found dead under a bus at the Eurotunnel terminal in Folkstone in UK. He will be later identified as Mahammat Abdullah Moussa, 25, from Chad.

9th October : Gebre Mariam commits suicide in Vottem retention centre in Belgium.

2nd October : an body is fished out from Calais port. It is suspected that he is the exiled man who disappeared on the port on the 23rd September

19th June : A., a 20 years old young man from Guinea died on the night of monday to tuesday in Brussels, trying to cross to England. He was hiding in a bus of tourists.

12th June : Louis, a 19 year old Ghanaian man commits suicide in Croisilles (near Arras)

11th June : A young man died hit by a vehicle on the A16, in Loon-Plage area (near Dunkerque)

17th May : Mawda, a 2 years old kurdish little girl, living in Grande Synthe died shot by police in Belgium.

28th March : A 16 years old young Eritrean man succumbed to his wounds Wednesday, after having been hurt on the highway near Calais port, on last Friday, the 23, March.

22nd March: a 22 years old Algerian man died, stucked up between 2 vehicules, at Zeebruges port in Belgium. He was trying to cross to England.

17th March : Ejaz Khan, a 25 years old afghan man, is found dead, stabbed, in Calais

30th January: Adero, from Oromia, died on the E40 near Jabbeke in Belgium. He was chased into the road by the police and hit by a car.

9th January: S, a young migrant from Eritrea, was found dead on the A16 motorway (near Marck, between Calais-Dunkerque) killed in a hit and run.

2017 :

29th December: Jabar, a father of two from Afghanistan, died after the truck he was travelling in crashed on the highway. He was trying to rejoin his family in the UK when he died.

21 December: Abdullah, a 15 year old from Afghanistan, was killed after being hit by a car on the A16 highway in Calais.

3 August: Fisha, a 22 year old man from Eritrea, died around 11:40pm, hit on the highway by several vehicles after jumping from the van in which he was.

22 July: Omar, a 17 years old boy from Soudan, is crushed by the bus on which he hooked on in Brussels.

20 June: a polish truck driver died after raming over a barrage on the highway.

31 May: Kim Le, a Vietnamese man staying in the camp near Angres, committed suicide at the hospital.

2nd May: a migrant dies at Paris Gare du Nord, burned by the electric arc formed by the catenaries on the roof of the Eurostar where he had managed to climb.

11 March: A 20 year old Afghan man died near Dunkurque, becoming unconscious  after jumping from a lorry in an attempt to cross.

21 January: Johnsina, a 20 year old Ethiopian man was killed on the A16, run over by lorries.

2016 :

18 October: Mohammad Omar, a 26 year old Sudanese man, died after being beaten by a group of people smugglers in the camp at Norrent-Fontes.

14 October: A man died after being hit by a freight train near Loon Plage.

9 October: An Eritrean man died after being struck by a car on the A16 motorway.

24 September: A man died on the railway tracks near the ring road (hit by a train), leading to the port.

16 September: A 14 year old boy was killed in a hit and run on the motorway.

23  August: A Sudanese was found dead after a fight at a crossing point, in which more than a dozen people were injured.

27 July: A Sudanese man was killed on the motorway, in a hit and run.

26 July: An Ethiopian man died after knife injuries from a fight in the jungle.

20-21 July: A man found struck by cars on the A16 motorway.

12th July: Samrawit, a 19 year old woman from Eritrea was killed in a hit and run on a motorway in Calais.

4th July: Someone died on the ring road.

29th May: Someone from Afghanistan was killed on Highway 16 after being hit by a truck.

9th May: A man from Pakistan was hit on the highway leading to the port after being hit by a car.

1st April: A man who had been staying in the camp of Grande-Synthe died after crossing to the UK on the axle of a truck which then crashed.

31st March: A 22 year old from man Afghanistan was hit by a truck an died on the A16.

2nd March: A Sudanese man died in his sleep in the large Sudanese tent in the jungle, from a heart-attack.

10th February: The body of a man from Afghanistan was found in the harbor. He had been missing for several days.

2015 :

28th December: A young man of either Iranian or Afghan origin was killed when sticking his head out of a moving truck.

8th December: A 25 year-old Sudanese man was stabbed in the Calais jungle.

3rd December: Youssuf, a teenager from Sudan, was hit by a car on the motorway.

2nd December: A man from Ethiopia was hit by a car on the motorway.

26th October: A car hit four men from Syria and Palestine, killing one of them.

16th October: A 16 year old from Afghanistan was run over by a train at the Eurotunnel, their body unidentifiable after being “torn to shreds over 400 metres”

15th October: a 30 year old Syrian woman was run over and killed on the A16 highway, on the approach to the eurotunnel

30th September: Berihu a 23 year old man from Eritrea was run over by a train in the Eurotunnel

28th September: the body of Omar, an Iraqi man was found crushed to death by falling pallets in the back of a lorry

24th September: a Adam, from Sudan, was hit by a train in the Eurotunnel, at the moment his nationality has not been indentified.

17-18th September: Eyas, 23 years old from Syria, was electrocuted on top of a train in the Eurotunnel. One or two others were hospitalized

16th September: Hicham, a 22 year old from Morocco attempted to swim to a ferry the port of Calais.  His body was found on the 20th September and not identified until the 13th October. He went with a friend who was rescued, suffering from hypotermia.

28th-29th July: Saleh, a 23 year old Sudanese migrant was found dead in the Channel tunnel

28th July: A Pakistani exile 30 years Sadik, died following an accident in the tunnel on the morning of July 27.

24th July: Ganet, a young Eritrean woman hit by a car about 5:30 on the A16. People at the scene reported that she was gassed in the face by the police before she was hit

23rd July: A teenager was found dead in the English part of the Eurotunnel at Folkestone.

19th July: Houmed, an Eritrean teenager of 17, drowned on the site of Eurotunnel.

16th July: Mohamad, a young Pakistani man of 23 years has died of his injuries from an accident in the Channel Tunnel on the night of July 13 to 14.

13-14th July: A Sudanese man died trying to go to England by the Channel Tunnel.

7th July: Abdel, a 45 year old from Sudan was found in the entrance to the Channel Tunnel during an inspection of a train, having suffered head injuries while trying to board a shuttle service

4th July: Samir, an Eritrean baby died one hour after birth. Her mother, twenty years old, fell from the truck triggering a premature delivery at twenty-two weeks.

29th June: Zebiba a 23 year old women from Eritrea was found dead on the side of the A16 between Calais and Marck. She had been staying the in the Women’s House in Jules Ferry.

26th June: Getenet, a 32 year old man from Ethiopia was killed attempting to board a shuttle service in the Eurotunnel.

31st May/1st June: a man from Eritrea was killed on the A16 Highway at the entrance to the Eurotunnel.

14th February: Wubeshet, an Ethiopian man, of 28 years, was found dead in his tent in the jungle by his friends. The reasons for his death are unclear, but friends said he had been beaten by a lorry driver.

2014 :

12th December: a Sudanese man was crushed under the wheels of the truck he had just crossed to England underneath. The lorry started to move while he was trying to climb out on the side of the M25

First week of December : A Man coming from Sudan died on the highway.

1st December : a Man coming from Eritrea was found dead on the A16 in the direction Calais-Boulogne.

19th November : a truck heading to England from Dunkirk catches on fire killing two people hiding inside.

25th October : Afom, a 26 year old man from Eritrea was hit by a car after being released from Coquelle detention centre. He was 9 days in a coma, and died on October 25th. He had only been two days in Calais.

24th October : Mohammad, a 22 year old man from Sudan died after attempting to jump onto the top of a lorry off a bridge. He died in hospital of his injuries.

20th October: a 16 year old woman from Ethiopia called Sara was killed crossing a major highway near Calais

7th October: Mouaz, 22, and Shadi, two Syrian men went missing from Calais. Their bodies were found hundreds of miles apart in Netherlands and Norway, but not identified for about 9 months, it is believed they drowned trying to swim to the UK

26th September : a young man from Sudan died after falling into the canal in Calais. Two of his friends had jumped in to try and help him out of the water, but were unable to do so.

23rd July: Ahmed Abdullah, 16, came from Sudan, who died on British soil falling from the bus in which he was hiding.

23rd May : Youssef Aroun, 19 years old from Sudan, was killed after falling from the axle of the wheels underneath a tourist bus he was hiding in whilst trying to cross to England.

5th May : Mengs Medhane, 16 years old from Eritrea, died after jumping from a truck he thought was heading to England.

15th March : A person from Ethiopia was killed having hit his head whilst hiding in a truck he thought was to going to England.

14th March : At midday, Senay Berha from Ethiopia, was found dead in the river near the camp known as the Eritrean camp. He had been missing for some days.

12th March : In the night, Mesfin Germa from Ethiopia, died on the A26 motorway near the rest area Rely, struck by a vehicle. The driver did not stop .

9th March : an Albanian man was stabbed and killed on the motorway outside of Calais.

3rd February : An Iranian exile thirty years has been killed by a bullet to the chest in the Industrial Zone Marcel Doret.

30th January : a 17 year old boy from Iran is killed by being driven over by a truck whilst trying to cross the border into the UK.

2013 :

10th December : Yemane Gaberanguse, from Eritrea, died from suspected heart failure on his way to trying to cross for England.

4th November : the body of Robiel, a young Eritrean, was found dead in the waters of Calais port.

6th August : Commanden, a young Afghan stabbed in a reprisal attack by mafia

2012 :

17th November : on the A16 in Grande-Synthe, a car in which nine people were crammed inside were in a traffic accident. Two sans papiers were ejected from the trunk. They died on the spot.

12th August: A woman from Vietnam was found dead on the beach in Wimereux, in combination, it seems that she wanted to cross the Channel to England.

7th July : 28 year-old Noureddin Mohamed, from Sudan, was found dead in Calais’ city canal. Police claim it was suicide, friends believe he was killed by police. No autopsy or investigation was undertaken despite pressure from family and friends.

16th May: A young migrant twenty years was killed in Ouistreham after receiving multiple stab wounds while trying to board a truck to England.

9th April : Zenebe (Yonatan  Abram), a young Eritrean man, was found dead in an abandoned lace factory

2011 :

22nd December : Ismael, a young Ethiopian man, was found dead at the foot of a bridge. Police claim it was suicide, friends believe he was killed by police or facists. No autopsy or investigation was undertaken despite pressure from friends.

9th December : Iranian man, 21 years old, killed after being hit by a bus walking along the road at night

17th November: Two Egyptians being transported in the boot of a car are killed during a crash. The other passengers survived.

11th September : Youssef, aged 28, Sudan, is killed whilst trying to cross

10th May : Iranian man is killed whilst trying to cross, apparently falling from a lorry

22nd February : Afghan man, aged 24, drowns in the canal whilst being chased by the PAF border police

7th February: Canstantine, a Romanian man of 50 years died at the station of Calais town from cardiac arrest.

2010 :

10th April : Rahmaddin, a 16-year old Afghan, is crushed by a lorry during an attempted crossing

9th April : Eritrean migrant found dead in an abandoned building

2009 :

15th December : Maïouad, a 15-year old Afghan boy, is killed trying to cross

30th October : 25-year old Indian man, Singh Gursharan, found dead in lorry during attempted crossing

13th June : Aman Fisahaye, a 35 year old Eritrean man died trying to wash in the canal, showers being refused by the authorities

19th May : Vietnamese woman, Ngayen Van Mac, is found dead on the road after apparently falling from a lorry

5th April : An unnamed man is killed after falling off a train in the channel tunnel

25th February : Glara, a six-day old Iraqi Kurdish baby dies as parents were forced to sleep in the cold.

7th January : A 30-year old Afghan stabbed in a fight

2008 :

15th October : Ramadan, 26 years old from Eritrea, fell into the Channel having tried to hide in a truck near St Omer. A resident, 47 years old from Norrent Fontes, Jean Pierre, dives to save him from drowning. They both die.

22nd July : Mansour Hamidey, 23 years old from Eritrea, was killed with a knife on the night of 22 to 23 during a fight in the parking lot of Saint-Hilaire-Cottes near Norrent Fontes, while attempting to cross to England.

15th July: An exile dies after being hit by a truck on a ramp from the A16 up to Transmarck near Calais. He was to cross the border into England

2007 :

14th July : an exile fell off a truck on the ramp of the A16 Marck.

7th July : A young woman, Louam Beyene, 19 years old from Eritrea, died after being hit by a car while crossing the A16 whilst she was running to escape the police.

2006 :

1st September : One person died and six injured in the port of Calais during fights between migrants and smugglers. They tried to stow aboard trucks to reach Britain

2002 :

16th December : The body of a man was found during a police control at Calais port under a truck where he was hiding to pass the English border.

The deaths in Calais are some of the many lives lost at Europe’s borders. There are countless more who are constantly dying at the hands of racist immigration controls and the situations they create; in Calais and across all border regimes and fortresses that violently protect a privileged minority, at the expense of the rest.
