Death on the Highway // Mort sur l’autoroute

Over night on the 12th of July, Samrawit, a 19 year old women from Eritrea was killed in a hit and run on one of the motorways in Calais.

It seems that the police then proceeded to use excessive tear gas in the jungle, even though people have reported that nothing had happened to provoke it.

Samrawit had been one of the many evicted from the camp in Steenvoorde the day before on the 11th of July. Forced back to Calais and to more dangerous ways of trying to cross the border. We challenge again the claim from the police that this eviction was peaceful having seen the devastating consequences.

Her community and her friends are grieving and we are with them.

This border kills and will not stop taking lives until it is opened.

Dans la nuit du 12 juillet, Samrawit, une femme de 19 ans originaire d’Erythrée a été mortellement percutée par un automobiliste qui a pris la fuite par la suite sur une des autoroutes de Calais.

Il semble que la police ait ensuite tiré une grande quantité de gaz lacrymos sur la jungle  alors que tout le monde dit que rien n’avait provoqué ça.

Samrawit fut l’une des nombreu-ses expulsé-es du camp de Steenvoorde la veille, le 11 juillet. Forcée à retourner à Calais et à essayer des moyens plus dangereux de tenter de traverser la frontière. Encore une fois, nous contestons les déclarations de la police évoquant une expulsion paisible et non violente au regard de ses conséquences dévastatrices.

Sa communauté et ses amis font leur deuil et nous sommes avec eux.

Cette frontière tue et ne cessera pas de prendre des vies tant qu’elle ne sera pas ouverte.
