#20j Calais in Solidarity / Calais en solidarité

20th, June 2020. World refugee day.
As part of the campaign Coasts in Solidarity, actions re-adapted to post Covid restrictions took place simultaneously in several cities along the european northern coast.

In Calais, testimonies and demands were posted around the city, along with stories of solidarity from Perou campaign and proverbs chosen by citizens with and without papers as activity of Secours Catholique.

A float of people and  paper boats marched to the beach in the late afternoon, where around 50 people went to the sea side attracting more than one eye. Call out for the world refugee day, but expecially to the borders that create misery for some, and solidarity that arises withing people on the move and people in border city. Special thoughts for those doing search and rescue, in the Med as in the Channel waters, nowadays also theatres of crossings but not (yet) criminalisation of those rescuing. Reading of testimonies of solidarity took place there, and a giant paper boat showed the way back up to the promenade, chanting and shouting choirs, approaching and giving paper boats to curious people around.

For the right to stay and to move! Stop deportations – once and for all!

Build solidarity cities and networks! Let us change societies from their foundations!

20 juin 2020. Journée mondiale des réfugiés.
Dans le cadre de la campagne Côtes solidaires, des actions réadaptées aux restrictions post-Covid ont eu lieu simultanément dans plusieurs villes le long de la côte nord de l’Europe.

A Calais, des témoignages et des revendications ont été affichés dans toute la ville, ainsi que des témoignages de solidarité de la campagne du Pérou et des proverbes choisis par des citoyens avec et sans papiers comme activité du Secours Catholique.

Une flotille de personnes et bateaux en papier a rejoint la plage en fin d’aprés-midi, où une cinquantaine de personnes se sont rendues au bord de la mer, attirant plus d’un regard.
Un appel à la journée mondiale des réfugiés, mais surtout aux frontières qui créent la misère pour certains, et à la solidarité qui s’établit avec les personnes en déplacement et les habitants des villes frontalières. Une pensée particulière pour celleux qui font de la recherche et du sauvetage, en Méditerranée comme dans les eaux de la Manche, aujourd’hui aussi des théâtres de passages mais pas (encore) de criminalisation de ceux qui sauvent. La lecture des témoignages de solidarité a eu lieu, et un bateau en papier géant a montré le chemin du retour vers la promenade, en chantant et en criant des slogans, en allant vers et donnant des bateaux en papier aux personnes curieuses des alentours.

Pour la liberté d’installation et de circulation ! Arrêter les expulsions – une fois pour toutes !

Construisons des villes et des réseaux de solidarité ! Changeons les sociétés depuis leurs fondations !

Paper boats with testimonials / Bateau en papier avec témoignages

Below you can find some inspiration for the flotilla of paper boats that we will together make appear all over Europe on the 20th of June. These are templates in different colors and with different quotes and testimonials to fold a paper boat.
If you follow the instructions on it you will get a boat with our slogans on the outside and a migrant testimonial on the inside. This way, when people unfold the boats, the voices of those who are silenced will be heard. Just print the pdfs in whatever size or color you like, fold them and spread them wildly! In public places, buses and trains, super markets, shopping streets, on the beach, at the river or in park! If you don’t have a printer, just fold any paper and write the message of Coasts in Solidarity on it, so that we are connected in a movement.
Don’t forget to take pictures of where you put your boats and spread these on social media with the hashtag #CoastsInSolidarity or send them to us (solicoast@riseup.net)! Our message will get into the homes and offices as well despite the confinement.

En-dessous, vous trouvez des inspirations pour la flotille de bateaux en papier que nous ensemble allons faire apparaître partout en Europe pour le 20 juin. Ce sont des modèles de bateaux en papier à plier dans des couleurs différents et contenant des citations et témoignages différents.
Si vous suivez les instructions, nos slogans apparaissent à l’extérieur et un témoignage d’un*e migrant*e à l’intérieur du bateau. De cette façon, lorsque le bateau en papier est déplié, les voix de ceux qui sont le plus souvent réduits au silence deviennent audibles. Imprimez les pdfs à la taille et aux couleurs qui vous plaisent, pliez-les et distribuez-les largement ! Dans les lieux publics, dans les bus et les trains, dans les supermarchés et les rues commerciales, aux plages, aux bords des rivières ou dans les parcs ! Si vous n’avez pas d’imprimante, pliez quelconque papier et écrivez le message de Côtes Solidaires dessus afin que nous serions lié dans un mouvement.
N’oubliez pas de prendre des photos des lieux où vous avez mis vos bateaux et partagez-les dans les médias sociaux via #coastsinsolidarity ou envoyez-les à nous (solicoast@riseup.net) ! Notre message atteindra les ménages et les bureaux malgré le confinement.

Le Ravage d’Ali Baba‘ is a project by De Koffie Van Morgen, creative platform of drummer and graphic artist Simon Plancke. Together with Musicians of Belgian jazz: Hendrik Lasure, Thijs Troch and Elias Devoldere, known from SCHNTZL, An Pierlé Quartet, Nordmann, Hypochristmutreefuzz… They went with volunteers. from Vzw Humain to refugee camps in Brussels and Dunkirk.

This is a list of 36 570 persons who died since 1993 (counted until 1 of April 2019) because of the fatal policies of “Fortress Europe” (border closure, asylum laws, accommodation, detention policy, deportations, carrier sanctions…). Documented by: UNITED for Intercultural Action

You can either read it out in the public or write the names with chalk on the ground to remember the thousands of people dying on their way to a better life.

Agnes’ testimonial

“I was beaten with bare hands, with sticks, with guns.”

“I left Eritrea four years ago with my husband. My husband was made to serve in the army, and he couldn’t provide for us. If he left the army, he’d be put in jail. Many people go to jail for no reason in Eritrea.

When we left we went to Sudan. We spent three years going from place to place, looking for work and trying to make enough money to come to Europe. Finally we made a bit of money, but it wasn’t enough for all of us, so I left with my daughter. My husband couldn’t come with us.

Crossing the desert between Sudan and Libya was very difficult. It took seven days, non-stop, in an overcrowded car.

After crossing the border, we moved from one town to the next until we arrived in Tripoli. We travelled in containers, like animals or objects. It was very dark and hot in the containers. Many people fainted because of the heat, and some died.

Libya is a very dangerous place. There are a lot of armed people. Some of them are Daesh. They kill a lot of people and carry out a lot of kidnappings.

When we arrived in Tripoli they put us in a house with 600 to 700 other people and locked us in. We had no water to wash ourselves, we had very little food and we were forced to sleep one upon the other. It was very difficult for my daughter – she fell sick many times.

There was a lot of violence. I was beaten with bare hands, with sticks, with guns. If you move, they beat you. If you talk, they beat you. We spent two months like that, being beaten every day.

They asked us to pay to go to Europe, so I paid US$1,700 for me and my daughter. We were lucky because women and children were put on the deck of the boat. The people below were in the dark and it was really hot down there. I could hear some of them saying they couldn’t breathe.

I knew that the journey would be very dangerous and difficult, especially for my daughter. But what was the alternative? We could not survive in Eritrea or Sudan. Our government does not allow people to leave. With our documents in Eritrea, there was no other way for us to get to Europe.”
