Since October 2015 the state has been constructing a closed camp inside the existing jungle, to house 1500 jungle residents. On the 5th January the municipality of Calais announced it would only tolerate 2000 people living in the jungle, and begun the process of coercing people into moving into this new container camp. Alongside the Jules Ferry day center (also located in the jungle and which houses 500), these state-controlled camps add up to the 2000 people « tolerated » by the Calais municipality.
The last time there were 2000 people living in jungles in Calais was almost a year ago, in March 2015. Since then numbers in the jungle have steadily increased to anywhere between 4000 and 6000, and everyone has been forced into one place: the jungle that exists today.
At the same time as this new container camp was due to open, the state announced plans to evict a large portion of the Jungle too, displacing 1500 people. Since then, the container camp has opened and people have slowly started moving in. The state intends to have it full by the end of the month. Those displaced from the eviction zone are not being given first preference in the closed camp.
At the moment we are getting a lot of questions about when the evictions are going to happen or start. Lets be clear, they have already started! An initial deadline was given, and people were told to leave by Thursday 14th. Now a second deadline has been communicated, the residents of the eviction zone have until Monday 18th. One thing is clear, the eviction may not happen this week, it may not happen next week but it will happen. The police in Calais have a lot of experience with evictions and they know that the best tool they have is fear. The police know that the tension is unbearable. It wears you down, not knowing when a huge earthmover, escorted by armed police, will arrive at your front door. The municipality in Calais also know that a large scale media spectacle of an eviction will only provide fuel to those who dare to claim that the state isn’t a benevolent and humanitarian institution.
They veil their threats of eviction with the sweetness of compassion, they begin by offering limited sleeping space in a camp designed to trap people and rob them of their freedom. They continue when many people are « re-homed » to other cities or when daily police and fascist violence increases dramatically (for more info on temporary re-housing efforts, see here). They continued when the Offi and the police go from tent to tent, counting down the days until the bulldozers are coming, making sure people feel like they have no choice but to go.
Psychologically and physically harassing people into moving is an eviction, and although few want to move, some have started to relocate in other parts of the jungle, or even into the container camp. Maybe the “deadline” will come and there will be no dramatic photos, the press agencies lacking their daily slice of beaten and gassed migrants but as time rolls on it will be an eviction none the less.
But why evict the Jungle? It is crucial to remember, the new Jungle was opened at the behest of the Calais municipality in collaboration with the state government. Now that Natacha Bouchart’s party control both the Marie and Senate for Calais, they can effectively do as they please. Sometimes it pays to look back, the last round of big evictions was slow and drawn out. They started in March 2015 and continued until the closure of the squat Galloo in June 2015. When the evictions of the squats in the city and the Tioxide Jungle began in March the policy was to drive all people living in such places out of the city onto a wasteland, by a highway, with little or no infrastructure and the constant threat of police violence. Instead what happened was that the new Jungle became in part an independent space where people with and without papers came together to study, play, build, and organise, in an autonomous and anarchistic manner, reclaiming and fighting for a freedom the state wishes to destroy (yes it is also a violent, unpredictable, hierarchical and dominating space too, but somehow it is both intensely hierarchical and egalitarian at the same time). The Jungle became, to some extent, a self-organised shanty town where people reclaimed a scrap of freedom in the shadow of the border. This freedom is something worth fighting for and the thing that the state cannot stand!
As well as another drawn out eviction, there are several protests and manifestations happening in January.

We are calling for support from anti-fascists and anti-racists in the UK, France, and across Europe to come and demonstrate in solidarity with the Sans Papiers of Calais.

We are making a callout for people to come to Calais in January to help us fight and resist with the people of the Jungle in what ever way possible. Come and protest against police violence, fight against the governments who create it, and undermine the fascists who support it. We call you to struggle against the borders, which are a tool for power and control, not just in Calais but wherever you are.
Freedom of movement for all- the border regimes must fall.
Please come prepared ! Bring a tent, or a van or arrange your own sleeping space in Calais. It is going to be a turbulent time on the ground and being self-sufficent is a priority.

Le 5 janvier, la municipalité de Calais a annoncé qu’il ne tolèreraient seulement 2000 personnes vivant dans la jungle, et a commencé à forcer les gens à aller dans ce nouveau camp de conteneurs, à côté du camp Jules Ferry (également situé dans la jungle et accueillant 500 personnes). Ces camps contrôlés par l’État sont prévus pour les 2000 personnes « tolérées » par la municipalité de Calais.
La dernière fois qu’il y a eu 2000 personnes vivant dans les jungles à Calais c’était il y a quasi un an, en mars 2015. Depuis, les chiffres de la jungle ont constamment augmenté pour arriver entre 4000 et 6000 personnes, et tout le monde a été forcé de se rendre à un endroit : la jungle qui existe aujourd’hui.
En même temps que ce nouveau camp de conteneurs devait ouvrir, l’État a annoncé des mesures pour évacuer une grande partie de la jungle (1500 personnes). Depuis, le camp de conteneurs a ouvert et les gens ont commencé à s’y rendre lentement. L’État a l’intention qu’il soit plein à la fin du mois. Les gens qui ont été virés de la zone de construction du camp n’ont pas été les premiers à pouvoir s’y rendre.
En ce moment nous recevons beaucoup de questions à propos de quand les expulsions vont se produire ou commencer. Soyons clairs, elles ont déjà commencé ! Une date butoir a été donnée, et les gens de s’en aller avant le jeudi 14. A présent, une seconde date butoir a été communiquée, les résidents de la zone d’éxpulsion ont jusqu’au lundi 18. Une chose est claire, l’expulsion n’aura peut être pas lieu cette semaine, ni la semaine prochaine, mais elle aura lieu. La police de Calais a beaucoup d’expérience en matière d’expulsions et elle sait que la meilleure arme qu’elle a est la peur. La police sait que la tension est insupportable. Ça vous use de ne pas savoir quand un énorme bulldozer escorté par la police armée va arriver à votre porte. La municipalité de Calais sait aussi qu’un spectacle médiatique à grande échelle d’une expulsion va seulement profiter à ceux qui osent dire que l’État n’est pas une institution humanitaire ou de bienfaisance.
Ils voilent leurs menaces pour l’expulsion par la douceur de la compassion, ils commencent par offrir des espaces où dormir, limités dans un camp conçu pour piéger les gens et les priver de leur liberté. Ils continuent quand beaucoup de gens sont « relogés » dans d’autres villes ou quand la quotidienne violence policière et fasciste augmente de manière dramatique (pour plus d’infos sur les efforts temporaires de re-logement, voirici). Ils ont continué quand l’Ofii et la police sont allés de tente en tente, faisant le compte à rebours des jours restants avant que les bulldozers ne viennent, s’assurant ainsi que les gens aient l’impression de n’avoir pas d’autre choix que de partir.
Harcelant psychologiquement et physiquement les gens pour qu’ils se fassent expulser, bien que peu veuillent partir, certains ont commencé à déménager dans d’autres parties de la jungle, ou même dans le camp de conteneurs. Peut-être que la « date butoir » va arriver et qu’il n’y aura pas de photos dramatiques, que les agences de presse manqueront leur part quotidienne de migrants battus et gazés mais le temps passe, et ça sera une expulsion, rien de moins.
Mais pourquoi expulser la jungle ? Il est crucial de se rappeler que la nouvelle jungle a été ouverte sur ordre de la municipalité de Calais en collaboration avec le gouvernement. Maintenant que le parti de Natacha Bouchart contrôle et la mairie et le conseil régional pour Calais, ils peuvent agir efficacement comme ils le veulent. Parfois cela vaut la peine de regarder en arrière, le dernier round de grosses expulsions était lent et interminable. Ils ont commencé en mars 2015 et ont continué jusqu’à la fermeture du squat de Galloo en juin 2015. Quand les expulsions des squats de la ville et de la jungle Tioxide ont commencé en mars, la police devait conduire tous les gens qui vivaient dans ces endroits en dehors de la ville dans une décharge, à côté d’une autoroute, avec peu ou pas d’infrastructures et la menace constante de la violence policière. A la place, ce qu’il s’est passé est que la jungle est partiellement devenue un espace indépendant où les gens avec ou sans papiers vivent ensemble pour étudier, jouer, construire, et organiser d’une manière anarchiste et autonome, manifestant et combattant pour une liberté que l’État aimerait détruire (oui, c’est aussi un espace violent, imprévisible, hiérarchique et dominateur, mais quelque part c’est intensément hiérarchique et égalitaire en même temps). La Jungle est devenue, d’une certaine manière, un bidonville auto-organisé où les gens réclament un peu de liberté dans l’ombre de la frontière. Cette liberté est une chose pour laquelle il est utile de se battre, et la chose que l’État ne peut pas empêcher !
En plus d’une autre expulsion interminable, quelques manifestations ont lieu en janvier.

23/01/2016 : Une manifestation Refugee Welcome est en cours de préparation par le groupe des migrants du CISPM (Coalition International Sans Papiers et Migrants). cette manifestation a attiré l’attention de l’extrême-droite qui a l’intention de faire une contre-mobilisation. Nous appelons au soutien des anti-fascistes et aux anti-racistes de la Grande-Bretagne, France et de toute l’Europe à venir et de manifester sa solidarité avec les sans-papiers de Calais.
30/01/2016 : En collaboration avec le réseau anti-raciste de Kent, nous prévoyons également de soutenir la contre-mobilisation des réseaux antifascistes contre le Front National, le 30 janvier.
