Two Iranian men were arrested in Folkestone on Saturday, after managing to walk the 31 mile length of the Channel Tunnel (article in The Guardian). They have been locked up and charged with the same nineteenth century law being used against Abdul Rahman Haroun, who made it through a month ago and is lingering in prison awaiting trial.

Also on Saturday, as these men were being hunted down, Eurotunnel boss Jacques Gounon was making a speech reported in the French press (article in Nord Littoral) celebrating Abdul Haroun’s imprisonment and complaining about how hard his job has become. The company chairman and chief executive, who receives a million euro annual salary, said: “just one illegal has finished his journey, in Folkestone, where he will be imprisoned for 2 years”. (NB: Abdul Haroun has not yet gone to trial, let alone been convicted, and Gounon is pre-emptively assuming he will get the maximum sentence.)

He went on to call for reinforcements to further militarise the area. “Let’s be clear: the other night, these were very far from poor unfortunates who seek refuge in England and have a right to a humanitarian approach. We were faced by veritable commandos, well coordinated, who haven’t just come up against us: they also massively attacked the port and stoned the trucks on the road to the port. Their goal: to make politics and destabilise the government.”

At least 11 people have been killed in or at the Eurotunnel since June. The most recent death was last Wednesday, a 20 year old Eritrean man (article on CNN). Many more have been injured by the razorwire fences, police, private security guards, and dogs. Now three people face up to 2 years in prison.

Gounon and the rest of the Eurotunnel management haven’t said a word about the deaths or shown an instant of empathy or understanding. For them, those risking their lives at the fences are not people. They are dangerous “commandos”. Or not even that, just unspecified “incidents” reported on Eurotunnel’s twitter (@leshuttle), with apologies to passengers for any inconvenience caused.

There will be a demonstration against Eurotunnel and allied company Eurostar at London’s St Pancras Station at 6PM on Saturday 24 October.

We call on groups in other cities to also organise protests against Eurotunnel, at the same time or otherwise.

Deux hommes iraniens ont été arrêtés à Folkestone samedi 3 octobre après avoir réussi à marcher les long des 50 km du tunnel sous la Manche. Ils sont emprisonnés et inculpés sous la même juridiction du XIXème siècle utilisée contre Abdul Rahman Haroun qui a lui aussi traversé le tunnel à pied il y a un mois et est depuis détenu en attente de son procès.

Samedi également, pendant que ces hommes étaient traqués, le patron de l’Eurotunnel Jacques Gounon faisait un discours, rapporté dans la presse française, célébrant l’emprisonnement d’Abdul Haroun et se plaignant de des récentes difficultés qu’il rencontre dans son travail. Le président de la société et directeur général, qui reçoit un salaire annuel d’un million d’euros, a déclaré : « Un seul clandestin a fini son voyage, à Folkestone, où il sera emprisonné 2 ans ». (NB : Abdul Haroun n’a pas encore été jugé, et encore moins condamné, et Gounon fait la supposition qu’il sera condamné de la peine maximale).

Il a continué à appeler au renforcement de la militarisation de la zone. « Soyons clairs : l’autre nuit, nous étions très loin du pauvre malheureux qui cherche refuge en Angleterre et qui a droit à une approche humanitaire. Nous étions face à de véritables commandos, bien encadrés, qui ne s’en prennent pas qu’à nous : ils ont aussi massivement attaqué le Port et caillassé les camions sur la rocade d’accès au Port. Leur but : faire de la politique et déstabiliser les pouvoirs publics. »

Au moins 11 personnes ont été tuées à l’intérieur ou près de l’Eurotunnel depuis juin. Le décès le plus récent remonte au 30 septembre, un érythréen de 20 ans. Beaucoup d’autres ont été blessés par les clôtures surmontées de lames de rasoir, la police, les gardes de sécurité privée et les chiens. Maintenant, trois personnes risquent jusqu’à deux ans de prison.

Gounon et le reste de la direction d’Eurotunnel n’ont rien déclaré a propos des morts ou montré une once de compassion ou de compréhension. Pour eux, ceux qui risquent leurs vies aux barrières ne sont pas des personnes. Ils sont de « dangereux commandos ». Ou même pas, juste des « incidents » reportés sur le compte twitter de l’Eurotunnel, avec des excuses aux passagers pour la gêne occasionnée.

Le samedi 24 octobre à 18 heures, il y aura une manifestation contre Eurotunnel et son alliée la société Eurostar, à la gare de St Pancras à Londres.
